Today we celebrate the transition of power and inaugurate the 46th President of the United States, Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. It is the culmination of a historic election, where we can celebrate that Vice President Kamala Harris will be the first woman vice president, and only the second person of color to be elected to the executive branch of the US Government behind Barack Obama.
Since the US Presidential office was created in 1789, there have been 92 men in the position of president or vice president. It took 131 years for women to have the right to vote, and an additional 45 years for African Americans be allowed to vote.
Vice President Kamala Harris is not stranger to breaking ground in US politics as she was the first black person to serve as Attorney General of California, and only the second black woman to be elected to the US Senate. This historic day comes after the determination and work of women and black Americans over the last 100 years.
We are seeing history being made today as it becomes clearer that diversity, equity, and inclusion contributes to this country’s greatness. It is important that we share this historic day with our children as it can teach them that they can strive for whatever they choose. In her November acceptance speech Kamala Harris said, “To the children of our country, regardless of your gender, our country has sent you a clear message — dream with ambition, lead with conviction and see yourselves in a way that others may not, simply because they have never seen it before.”
There has never been an inauguration before that has added an element for children to learn and be involved until this day. You can join Keke Palmer and Dr. Jill Biden as they host the first-ever inauguration day program for young American children. The program starts at 7:00AM PST and can be found below:
